What is functional medicine?

What is functional medicine?

Functional Medicine:

  • focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease.

  • seeks to optimize the body's innate ability to heal itself.

  • generally involves a more in-depth biochemical evaluation than what standard medical care is usually able to offer.

  • is personalized lifestyle medicine.

  • recognizes that dietary and lifestyle changes as well as high-quality nutritional supplements are often vital to health restoration.

How Functional Medicine Works:  A Deeper Dive (21 minutes)

Could you benefit from functional medicine?

You may want to consider a functional medicine health evaluation at Cornerstone Functional Medicine LLC if:

  • you or your child has one or more chronic medical conditions which are not improving, are not well controlled, or have gone undiagnosed by standard medical testing,

  • you wonder if there is a way to potentially reduce your need for chronic medications, or

  • you are relatively healthy and want to feel better, optimize your health, and reduce your risk of chronic disease.

Functional medicine utilizes an in-depth history and a physical exam, combined with standard and advanced diagnostic testing, in order to better understand the root causes of your medical conditions.  It then addresses the issues affecting your health through diet, lifestyle changes, targeted supplementation, and, when indicated, prescription medications.  The aim of functional medicine is to add to your life those factors which promote health and remove from your life those factors which promote disease.  Our goal is to intervene as far upstream as possible (addressing the root causes) instead of focusing on treating the downstream consequences of disease.

All too often we ignore our health until disease develops and then do little to address the primary factors which have led to our failing health.  This does not have to be your story.  There is much that can be done to help with chronic conditions, such as autoimmune disease, cardiovascular disease, chronic fatigue, cognitive decline, diabetes, digestive disorders, eczema/psoriasis, fibromyalgia, and hormonal imbalances.

Let us help you gain a better understanding of how you got to where you are now and what it would take to change the trajectory of  your health and your future healthcare expenditures.  It is hard to underestimate the value of investing in your current and future health and well-being.  Click here for more information about functional medicine.

Benefits of Neurotherapy

Could you benefit from neuromodulation?

Newer technologies are now available to help address the root causes of many neurologic, psychiatric, and/or learning disorders which arise from biochemical and electrical abnormalities in the brain.  We offer neurofeedback (brainwave biofeedback) and a variety of neurostimulation therapies, including transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) using near-infrared LEDs, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), and pulsed electromagnetic field (pEMF) stimulation.   To determine if one or more of these therapies could be helpful to you, we first perform a 3D quantitative EEG map of your brain's function in our office.  If any abnormalities are found that correlate with your symptoms, a personalized protocol is developed with the goal of improving brain function in those specific dysregulated regions and networks of the brain.  Dr. Lewis is board-certified in neurofeedback through the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance.  Click here for more information about these neurotherapies.
